Understanding Vocal Registers: A Journey to Your Best Voice

This post is the third part of a series where we dive deep into vocal registers. In my first video, I introduced two essential muscles that control your voice: the Thyroarytenoid (TA) and Cricothyroid (CT) muscles. These muscles are fundamental to mastering various vocal techniques. In the second video, we explored the vocal fry—a unique register used for adding texture to your voice. If you haven’t seen those videos yet, I highly recommend checking them out to get the most out of this lesson.

Today, we’re focusing on what’s known as the chest voice. This is the vocal register (or sub-register, as we like to call it in the studio) that most of us use when we speak. In fact, it’s the very register you’re hearing me use right now. The chest voice is essential for producing those strong, resonant low notes that make your singing powerful and captivating.

What Is Chest Voice?

All vocal sounds originate from the vocal folds located in your larynx, often referred to as the “source” of your voice. The term “chest voice” comes from the sensation many singers feel when they speak or sing in this register—it often feels like the sound is resonating in your chest, throat, or even your mouth. Want to feel it yourself? Try this quick exercise: say a loud “HEY!” and place your hands on your chest. Do you feel the vibrations? That’s your chest voice in action!

Some experts, especially those who approach voice from a scientific perspective, refer to the chest voice as an “active vocal fold adjustment.” This contrasts with other vocal techniques like breathy voice, where the vocal folds are less engaged, or head voice, where the folds are more passive.

In chest voice, the TA muscle is the dominant player. While it’s not as prominent as it is in the vocal fry, it still plays a significant role in producing a full, rich sound. Mastering this register is crucial for singers who want to build a robust lower range.

Why You Should Train Your Chest Voice

If you’re someone who struggles with weak low notes or lacks volume in your singing, focusing on chest voice can make a world of difference. Training this register is key to developing a solid foundation for your voice. One of my favorite exercises for strengthening the chest voice is the “BUH” exercise, which I recently shared on my YouTube channel. It’s a simple yet effective way to build resonance and power. Be sure to check it out!

The Difference Between Modal and Chest Voice

You might have heard the term “modal voice” before. This is actually the technical name for the vocal register most of us use the majority of the time, both in speech and singing. The modal register is divided into three sub-registers: chest voice, mixed voice, and head voice. While today’s post focuses on chest voice, stay tuned for future videos where we’ll dive into the other sub-registers.
